Project Director at Family Justice
New York, NY

My job is focused on enhancing the way staff work within corrections, parole department, and juvenile justice agencies so that their practices are more family-focused and strength-based. Gender plays a big role in how male staff interact with female prisoners for example. It is often a shift for case managers to consider the social support an incarcerated man might want and how to help him maintain relationships while in prison, while the same case managers have an easier time thinking about family and social support for incarcerated women. I am also very cognizant of the different ways men come into contact with the criminal justice system as compared to women. Treatments and assessment tools designed for incarcerated men have different effects on incarcerated women. Being able to apply by WGSS background to this work has opened my eyes to more and more opportunities for change and improvement within the criminal justice system.
